| 1. Introduction Training Ships are there for the purpose of training officer cadets. The SAGRES II, which this site is dealing about, has been built at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg in 1937/38. She entered the service of the German Navy under the name of ALBERT LEO SCHLAGETER. She was the third of a class which began with the GORCH FOCK and then followed by the HORST WESSEL which is now in the service of the U.S. Coast Guard and has been renamed EAGLE. The vessel was transfered to the Portuguese Navy on the 8th of February 1962 and became the Training Ship SAGRES. She left Rio de Janeiro on the 25th of April 1962 for her very first voyage under the Portuguese Flag. |
